Mãe, Mutter, Mater, Mat’, Amma, Mummy

The human mind can never cease to amuse. This next blog was penned thanks to a conversation on the phone, reading a blog and a day at office. It all started with a conversation when the person at the other end was venting her frustration about how money is never enough, and how she gets paid peanuts, and how hers is one of the most awful jobs. Ofcourse, I am sure she didn’t really mean it, these are usual feelings after a bad day at office, and trust me on this!

So it got me started to wonder about which is probably the most thankless job. A programmer, a hangman, a priest, a traffic police, a soldier, naah. These are pale comparison in front of the thankless job of being a MOM. If you don’t agree just ask your mom.

Let us delve into the intricacies of being a ‘fulltime’ mom. Let’s start with the biggest disadvantage; there is no salary at the end of the month. You can’t just resign, there is no retirement. It’s for life! You can’t get a new set of kids; you are stuck with yours forever. There are no promotions. Once a mom, always a mom. Your worries are endless, till the day you die. There are no leaves. You are responsible for training your kids to ‘live’ without receiving any formal training. You personal experience in living is all you have, and ofcourse the never ending advice from relatives. Your kids almost never listen to you, as they always believe they know better, and this can begin as early as 3. You never get appreciated for all the hardwork and dedication that you show, especially if you have a son. (Especially like me) The list could go on and on. And the fact remains; being a mom is the most thankless job!

Ofcourse, I am the main reference point for this blog. But I am sure there are many like me. So what can be done? One think that I can think of is after the birth of second child we should promote them to senior mom. Celebrate her birthdays! And anniversaries. Gift them more regularly. But I guess the best way is to say ‘I love you mummy’ more often, and atleast once in our life say ‘Thankyou!’

Incase you are wondering about the other job, being a DAD, that’s another thankless job too, but I am hoping some daddy’s girl would be up for the task to blog it.

PS: I really wonder how my mom would react to this blog…
Also, it’s really fascinating how in most languages, mother always start with ‘Mm’. I guess it’s the simplest sound baby can make.
